I have recently seen a lot of confusion over perms. I want to clear up a few things about perms for those of you that want one or are thinking about it. I am going to share all of my advice and what I have seen throughout my hair.
I have had about three perms. I get them every two years. In third grade, I got my hair cut as a bob. From their my hair was a wavy thick mess. It would be curly and choppy and frizzy. I decided to get a perm, and luckily for me my aunt who is a hair stylist did it for me. I would not recommend getting a perm if you wear your hair straight or apply a straightener to your hair everyday. It defeats the purpose of a curly perm.
1st Misconception: Perms are not healthy for your hair.
Yes and no. Perms are great if you want your hair to grow. Taking a shower, applying cream and going. It's a lot more manageable. However, in order to get a perm, you have to have chemicals put in your hair. I mentioned above that I had very thick frizzy hair. I can see with time that the chemicals have thinned out my hair. When you have to brush your hair with a perm, its easiest to do so wet. It does break your hair. But that is the only time you can brush it. My hair grows a lot faster and is not dead because I used to straighten it everyday, and with a perm I do not.
2nd Misconception: I can dye my hair and straighten as much as I want and my hair will still grow.
NO. I have had three and I do not recommend EVER coloring your hair after you've gotten or during your perm. I don't recommend it if you color your hair because that is wayyy to many chemicals in your hair. I get that when you dye or highlight you have to touch it up. I have straightened my hair with perms before. Yes it takes awhile but I do not suggest you apply heat of any sort to your hair once you get a perm. You really need to let the hair and chemicals set. When you straighten it a lot, your hair is not as healthy and it can pull or flatten the curls.
3rd Misconception: When I get my perm, gels and mouses are the best to use.
No. no. no. If you have problems with frizz (summertime with a perm you will have frizz.) you will need to use a cream. I love the Moroccan Oil Curl Defining Cream. It is pricey but amazon has it for a reasonable price. If you have a beauty card, they are sold at Cosmoprof.
